Google and local visibility

Can you rank in AI Overviews?

By the RankNext team · Updated July 2026

The short answer

Not in the traditional sense, because AI Overviews have no ranked positions. Google assembles each overview per query and cites a handful of sources it trusts, so the real goal is becoming citable. You earn that eligibility with the same signals that drive strong organic results: clear direct answers, topical depth, and a credible, consistent business footprint.

Treat "ranking in AI Overviews" as shorthand for eligibility, not position. Google builds each overview fresh, pulls from pages that answer the exact question cleanly, and the cited set shifts from query to query and week to week. There is no position two to climb into.

What earns citations looks a lot like what earns strong organic results: pages that answer one question directly in the first sentence, visible expertise, and a consistent business identity across the web. For local service businesses that includes your Google Business Profile and city-specific pages, which we cover in detail in our guide to AI Overviews for local businesses.

Be skeptical of anyone selling you a placement inside AI Overviews, because nobody controls what Google generates. The honest play is stacking the odds: publish genuinely citable answers, keep them current, and track which queries actually surface your pages so you double down where it works.
