Doing AEO
Does keyword strategy still matter for AI visibility?
By the RankNext team · Updated July 2026
The short answer
Yes, keyword strategy still matters for AI visibility, but the unit of strategy has changed from keywords to questions. AI engines match conversational queries against pages that answer specific questions, so a flat keyword list only helps once you translate each term into the real questions customers ask and build pages that answer them directly.
Keyword research still tells you what customers want, and it is still the cheapest demand data you can get. What changed is the query itself: people ask ChatGPT and Google's AI results full questions like 'how much does septic pumping cost near me' instead of typing 'septic pumping cost'. Engines then look for pages shaped like answers to that exact question.
So the working move is translation, not abandonment. Take every keyword you were targeting, write out the three to five real questions hiding inside it, then give each one its own heading with a direct answer underneath, the way we lay out in our guide to AEO website structure.
Our blunt take: keyword lists age into question lists or they age out. The terms are still the input, but the local businesses getting picked up by AI engines tend to be the ones that answered the question plainly, kept it current, and followed the rest of these AEO best practices.
