Is AEO a one-time project or a monthly service?
Answered by Ryan, RankNext strategist · Updated July 2, 2026
The short answer
Both, in sequence. The foundation — crawler access, schema, llms.txt, profile overhaul, core pages — is a genuine one-time build. But recommendations are held with ongoing signals: review velocity, fresh content, listing consistency, and engines that change constantly. One-time AEO is like one-time fitness; the build without the habit decays.
What's honestly one-time
Technical readability is mostly a project: allow the crawlers, fix the rendering, add LocalBusiness and FAQ schema, publish llms.txt, restructure the core pages. Done well, it stays done for months at a stretch. If a provider quotes a one-time 'AEO setup' for roughly a month's retainer and delivers this list, that can be honest value.
The trap is stopping there. A perfectly readable site with stale reviews and dormant content is a well-formatted argument that you've gone quiet — and the engines keep reading.
What's honestly ongoing, and why
Three forces make maintenance real: your signals age (review recency decays weekly, content dates itself seasonally), the ecosystem drifts (listings get overwritten, platforms change), and the engines themselves update — the answer that named you in March was regenerated under new conditions by June.
That's why our model is a build phase then month-to-month operations, cancelable anytime. The monthly reports carry captured answers, so you can see whether ongoing is earning its keep — and stop if it isn't. That's the accountability a one-time invoice can't offer.
