AI and your business
How do I check my AI visibility?
By the RankNext team · Updated July 2026
The short answer
Run two checks. First, ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Mode the questions your customers actually ask, in fresh sessions with no chat history, and note whether your business gets named or cited. Second, confirm AI crawlers like GPTBot and PerplexityBot can actually fetch and read your pages. Most owners test one side and miss the other.
Start with the answers. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Mode in fresh sessions, logged out or in a brand-new chat so your own history does not skew the results, and type the exact questions a customer would, like "who should I call for drain cleaning in Frisco." Run each prompt two or three times, because AI answers vary, and write down every business named and every source cited.
Then check the plumbing, because an engine can only recommend a site it can read. Verify your robots.txt is not blocking GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot, and that your key pages ship as plain HTML rather than JavaScript those crawlers never execute. A tool like our AEO checker surfaces these blockers in a couple of minutes.
Most people run one check and stop, usually the fun one where they ask ChatGPT about themselves, while a robots.txt line quietly keeps the crawlers out. Do both, and repeat monthly since AI answers shift. Or skip the manual work and run our free AI visibility check, which looks at the answer side and the crawler side in one pass.
