What is an AI visibility score?

By the RankNext team · Updated July 2026

The short answer

An AI visibility score is a number an AEO tool assigns to estimate how often a brand shows up in AI answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and similar engines. Every vendor computes it from its own prompt set with its own weighting, so scores are not comparable between tools and no industry standard exists.

Under the hood, the tool runs a fixed list of prompts against a few engines, checks whether your brand gets mentioned or cited in each answer, and rolls the results into a single number. Change the prompt list or the weights and the score changes with it. That is why the same business can score high in one tool and low in another on the same day.

Our view: a score you cannot open up to the underlying answers is a claim, not a measurement. Before you trust one, ask to see the actual prompts, the actual engine responses, and the dates they were captured. A vendor that will not show you that raw material is selling a dial, not data.

Scores do have one honest use: tracking your own trend inside a single tool over time, since its prompt set stays roughly constant. For a breakdown of which numbers are worth watching and which are noise, see our guide to AI search visibility metrics.
