What is a typical AEO engagement length?

By the RankNext team · Updated July 2026

The short answer

Most AEO engagements are ongoing monthly retainers, with agencies typically asking for 6 to 12 month commitments and some offering month-to-month. There is no natural end date because AI answers keep shifting; citations, reviews, and content need continuous upkeep, and visibility tends to fade once the work stops.

The monthly model is not a billing trick. AEO work compounds: reviews, citations, and fresh content stack up over time, and AI engines keep re-reading those signals. Stop the work and they go stale, which is why one-off audits rarely move anything on their own.

That said, long lock-ins mostly protect the agency, not you. A confident AEO agency will offer month-to-month or a short initial term because they expect the work to speak for itself. Our rule: never sign a contract you cannot leave.

The fair test is 3 to 4 months. Early movement usually shows inside that window, so if you see nothing by then, start asking hard questions. Our AEO results timeline lays out what should be happening month by month.
