How do I find my AI visibility gap?

By the RankNext team · Updated July 2026

The short answer

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google's AI results the questions your customers actually ask, and record who gets named in each response. Your AI visibility gap is every question where an engine recommends a competitor or a directory instead of your business. It is a per-question list, not a single score.

Start with a fixed list of 15 to 25 prompts a real customer would type: best-in-city questions, emergency questions, cost questions, and "who do you recommend" phrasing for your trade. Keep that list identical every time you run it, otherwise you are measuring your prompts, not your visibility.

Run every prompt on each engine your customers use and log one of three outcomes: you were named, a competitor was named, or a directory like Yelp or Angi took the slot. Resist averaging this into one number; a plumber can own every emergency question and still lose every cost question, and only the per-question view tells you what to build next. Our guide to measuring AI visibility covers the full method.

Watch the directory answers closely. When Yelp or Angi holds a question, no local competitor has claimed it yet, which usually means it is still winnable.
